Tsavo East National Park together with Tsavo West National Park form one of the world’s largest national parks, covering a massive 4% of Kenya. Tsavo East is the larger of the two. The wildlife found in this park includes large herds of elephants, maneless lions, hippos, giant crocodiles and an assortment of bird life among others. This park boasts of the largest herds of elephants in Kenya which are red in colour as a result of spraying themselves with the rusty red soil of the park in order to keep cool and deter parasites.

Tsavo East is one of the world’s leading biodiversity strongholds offering miles of open plains, bushy grasslands and semi-arid scrubs.

Tsavo East is a vast, plain, broken by the sinuous length of the Galana River. A major feature of the park, this river is fringed by riverine forests dominated by Acacis elatior, the doum palm Hyphaene compressa and the shrub Suaeda monoica. Running almost the length of the park is a sinuous ridge of lava intrusion-theYatta plateau. The Plateau is a ridge of solidified lava about 300km long and a maximum of 10km wide, which forms a never ending backdrop of Tsavo East. It is one of the longest lava flows in the world offering a fabulous view across the park.

The rivers found in Tsavo East include the Athi River which crosses the north-western portion of the park, following the southern edge of the Yatta Plateau. The Galana River is further south and is joined by the Tsavo River. The Voi River which flows through the southern portion of the park known as the Voi River Circuit makes an excellent game viewing and offers a pleasant drive.

Tsavo West’s is characterized by a rugged arid landscape with vast areas of lower altitudes of Kenya. This park is marked with, a number of rocky outcrops and volcanic hills. The wildlife found in this park includes elephants, maneless lions, rhinos, leopards, giraffes, hippo, reptiles and an assortment of birdlife among others.

Shetani lava flow is such a breathtaking site which is most recent of the lava flows in Tsavo. Situated near Kilanguni – it is possible to observe the nature of the lava flow close-up by walking on it. At the northern edge of the park is the Chyulu Hills range. This is a volcanic system that follows deep faults in the earth. Tsavo’s popular attraction is the beautiful Mzima Springs is located south of this range. Refreshing and cool, the walk along the shore lets you marvel at the hippos and crocodiles swimming in the crystal clear water.

The Tsavo River is one of the rivers found in this region which is fed by the distant eastern slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. It joins the Athi forming the meandering Galana in Tsavo East. Lake Jipe which is fringed by reed beds and a magnet for birdlife is located in the south-western corner of the park.

The magnificent Ngulia Hills locate 30 km from mzima springs display a range of sheer cliffs that rise out of 610m below to a height of 1800m above sea level.
The famous Rhino Sanctuary is the home to rescued rhinos from notorious poachers, plus relocated animals, have been moved to the area of 65 k ringed by a metre-high electric fence Close to Rhino Valley Lodge.
